My wife Courtney and I are excited to have the opportunity to travel to the Holy Land early next year in January. We will be flying into Tel Aviv, Israel and then going to spend most of our time in the contested city of Jerusalem. From there, we will travel down to the Palestinian city of Bethlehem in the West Bank, up to Galilee, and then back to Tel Aviv before taking our flight back to the United States.
The focus of our trip is to learn more about the three Abrahamic faiths that claim this land as holy (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the theological significance of the various places located there. However, special focus will be placed on studying the current struggle between the Israeli and Palestinian communities who both lay claim to this land as a part of their heritage. Of course, in addition to learning about this crisis there will be some regular trips made to churches, mosques, and religious sites during our time there. The trip is connected with and is a part of my Master of Divinity (M.Div.) program at Luther Seminary which is located in St. Paul, Minnesota.
I will be writing about this experience before, during, and after the trip. These posts will be about the places we are visiting, the people we are talking with, reflections on the struggles of the Israelis and Palestinians, and even reviews of some of the books that I have chosen to read. You can sign-up to receive these posts via email at the link below. Simply put your email in and you will get these sent to you as I post them. I hope you will take the time to follow our trip and learn more yourself about this land, its promises, challenges, and its significance for our time.
